Preparatory Program in Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychotherapy

NYPSI's Preparatory Program in Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychotherapy is designed for clinicians who are potentially interested in psychoanalytic training. The Prep Program is a two-year program in which eligible clinicians take one night per week of psychoanalytic training program courses. The first year of courses consists of the Wednesday night classes which includes the sequence of classes on development (from infancy to adolescence), introductory courses on psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalytic diagnosis, a class on deepening the treatment, a psychotherapy continuous case course, and courses on manualized therapy for panic disorder and transference-focused psychotherapy.

The second year of courses consists of the Monday night classes of the first year of psychoanalytic training, which is a bit more focused on psychoanalysis: including psychoanalytic listening, psychoanalytic technique, how to assess for analyzability, and a course on Freud’s case histories and essays on sexuality. The year ends with a class on psychoanalytic case development.

By the end of the two years of the Prep program, students will have completed the first year of psychoanalytic training. It is expected that by late winter/ early spring of the second year of the program, students will decide whether they wish to continue in the psychoanalytic program. At that point, the student will have to go through the application process for the psychoanalytic training program. The student will also be ready to commence a training analysis and will be expected to take a “control” case in psychoanalysis before the fall (at which point the student will be a second year psychoanalytic candidate).
